Celiac Plexus Block
A Celiac Plexus Block is a minimally invasive procedure done on an outpatient basis. During a Celiac Plexus Block a needle is placed next to the spine and in the proximity of vital organs. For this reason it is critical that an experienced physician perform the procedure. The needle is inserted using fluoroscopic guidance, so the physician can directly observe placement. A Celiac Plexus Block can result in a significant reduction in abdominal pain, and can work for extended periods of time. Neurolytic substances such as alcohol or phenol, or Radiofrequency Lesioning, can provide more permanent blocks which often last six months or longer. A short-term backache is a possible side effect of a Celiac Plexus Block though most patients do not experience side effects.
